My Experience at Allegra Printing Abbotsford

During the summer of 2024, I had the fantastic opportunity to complete my practicum as a Junior Graphic Designer at Allegra Printing in Abbotsford. As a third-year Graphic Design student, I have developed a deep appreciation for print design and felt that dipping my toes in the industry would be the best way to explore my passion.

My experience was everything I had anticipated and much more! Not only was I able to work alongside the team, but I was simultaneously challenged through other fields of design, which helped me understand and learn the various skills one needs to thrive in the real world. It also taught me how unpredictable work-life can be and how balancing it is a marathon and not a sprint.

Through bi-weekly meetings, I met with Jen to discuss my progress and receive feedback and direction, which often led to exciting discussions as I navigated my workload.

One of the biggest challenges during this practicum was adjusting to the work setting. From the beginning, I quickly realized that having an open mind and being flexible would be a great tool. However, as time passed, I realized that setting boundaries was a perfect way to prevent burnout. I planned my schedule, adhered to deadlines, and constantly assessed feedback. I was able to streamline my work, feel slightly stress-free, and be efficient while learning new things.

There were many exciting aspects to my practicum, but a few highlights included working one-on-one with management on the company’s social media. I learned about their values and how they function, which helped me create content that promotes their values and attracts clients. By the end of my practicum, I was sad to say goodbye to such a fantastic environment and team.

Reflecting on my experience, I can see the value of good communication, relationship building, knowledge and time management. Without bi-weekly meetings and regular emails, I would not have achieved what I have. Time management was especially crucial in ensuring I met my hours and achieved good results. I strongly recommend any student who can take a practicum to do so! I gained real-life experience in a safe and supportive environment, all with the guidance of Jen and the Allegra team.
