GRAPHIC DESIGN STUDENT ASSOCIATION

The Graphic Design Student Association was founded during the Fall 2024 semester by Hannah Lord and Lisa Visscher, with the visual identity being developed by Madalene Morton, and mascot design by Mary Ho. The GDSA brings students together through pop-ups, zine workshops, collage sessions, printmaking, and more. It’s a chance to connect with fellow designers, foster creativity, and explore design beyond the classroom.

The GDSA uses bright colours, simplistic shapes, and diverse typography to create a playful and experimental visual identity that reflects its dynamic and creative spirit. The bold and approachable aesthetic helps the GDSA stand out amongst other student associations, and resonate within design-forward communities. The visual identity is consistently applied across a variety of marketing assets, including wordmarks, posters, social media graphics, and merchandise.

THE ART OF GROWING UP

The Art of Growing Up is the culmination of Madalene's exploration of collage-making as a form of art therapy. The result was a 32-page hand-bound book featuring 9 hand-created collages, as well as a collection of information about art therapy, all rooted in research and experience. Each spread features a collage created by an interviewee, accompanied by highlights from their conversation.

By facilitating collage-making sessions with her interviewees, Madalene observed individuals express themselves through art and share personal stories often left untold. This book also serves as a tribute to those closest to her—people who played a vital role in her self-discovery, offering unwavering support. Creating the book opened the door to meaningful, eye-opening conversations that might not have happened otherwise, helping her break down emotional barriers and strengthen connections with those who matter most.

JS KARATE ACADEMY

JSKarate is a small dojo in Walnut Grove, BC, founded by Higo Sensei with a focus on traditional Japanese Shotokan karate, including kumite, kata, and kihon. With Higo Sensei relocating to Japan, the Canadian Karate Academy will take over the dojo. Instead of replacing the original brand, JS Karate Academy merges elements of both, resulting in a refreshed identity—new marks, colour palette, typography, and marketing assets like advertising, merchandise, and a redesigned website.
