Onsa Prell, meaning “our trash” in Low German, explores how Mennonite culture can inform contemporary design practice. Drawing on values such as material reuse, longevity, and environmental responsibility, the project highlights lessons modern design can learn from traditional ways of making.

The outcome includes a collaboratively created quilted table placemat, quilted coasters, and a wooden box, all made using repurposed materials.

It was constructed from Elora’s family’s food packaging waste and salvaged wood from her great-great grandfather’s wooden bedroom chest. It was a collaborative project she created with her Mennonite grandparents. The project reflects both a critique of packaging waste and a celebration of craft, heritage, and intergenerational making.
